The Old Primary School of Gaios, built in 1906 by Andreas Syngros, is a remarkable example of neoclassical architecture that still stands today. This building, now used as the Municipal Council Hall, was constructed following the recommendation of Theodoros Vellianitis, the then Minister of Education and a native of Paxos.

Architecturally, the building adheres to the neoclassical style, with a rectangular structure measuring 15.70 by 10 meters. A key feature is the symmetrical arrangement of the windows, framed by vertical pilasters, which give the building a sense of elegance and harmony. The facade is further enhanced by projecting cornices, adding depth and character to the exterior. Above the main entrance, a triangular pediment emphasizes the building’s classical design, while the tiled roof is complemented by decorative finials, lending a distinctive charm.

The school’s design extends beyond the main structure. It is surrounded by a courtyard, providing a spacious outdoor area, while the rear of the building features a grand entrance. This entrance, with its stone columns and another triangular pediment, creates an impressive and welcoming feel, symbolizing the importance of the building in the community. The large gate at the rear adds to its stately presence.

Over time, this school has gained recognition as a place of historical and cultural significance. It has been officially designated as a Historic Preservable Monument and a Work of Art, acknowledging its value not only as an educational institution of the past but also as a lasting architectural and cultural treasure of Paxos.

Today, the building houses the Municipal Council Hall, continuing its legacy as a focal point for the island’s community, albeit in a different role.
