Paxos is a beautiful, serene island known for its lush greenery and peaceful vibe. Despite being one of the smallest Ionian islands, measuring just 10.5 km long and 3.6 km wide, there are several convenient ways to explore it. Here’s how to get around Paxos using local transportation options like buses, taxis, and more:
Paxos is a perfect island for walkers, offering scenic routes that showcase its natural beauty. From ancient olive groves to pine-covered hills, the island’s diverse greenery is a sight to behold. Many of the island’s dirt roads, shaded by trees, lead to secluded beaches that feel untouched. As you wander through narrow lanes, you’ll come across charming old churches, traditional huts, windmills, cisterns, and small villages.
While it’s possible to explore the entire island on foot, it would take several days to cover it all. If you’re using your phone for navigation, be aware that mobile signals can be unreliable in some areas. We recommend carrying a physical map if you’re not confident with directions.
Always bring water with you, especially if you plan to walk away from the main villages, as the summer heat can be intense and dehydration is a risk.
If you’re wondering about walking between Lakka, Loggos, and Gaios, it’s important to note that while Google Maps can provide time estimates, the main roads lack sidewalks and proper lighting at night. There are some footpaths available during the day, and locals or your host can often recommend routes from your accommodation to nearby beaches or villages.
The local bus service on Paxos offers a scenic and convenient way to travel between the main villages. Operating since the 1980s, it’s popular with both locals and tourists. As you ride through the island’s narrow streets, you’ll enjoy stunning views of the sea and lush landscapes. A highlight is the stretch in Loggos, where the bus passes just centimeters from the water.
The bus connects key villages like Lakka, Loggos, Magazia, and Gaios, with stops near several beaches:
–Lakka: Harami, Kanoni, Lakka Beach
–Loggos: Gouli, Levrehio, Marmari Beach
–Gaios: Gianas, Plakes Beach
You can also request stops for other beaches. For example:
-Near Lakka, get off at the Orkos & Lakos Bus Stop and walk to Lakos (10-15 minutes) or Orkos (20 minutes).
-In Apergatika, ask to be dropped off for a 15-20 minute walk to Monodendri Beach.
-From Tzilios, request a stop to walk to Kipos or Kipiadi.
-From Magazia, you can walk to Erimitis Beach.
In July and August, the bus also runs at night, allowing you to enjoy the sunset before catching a ride back. Always check the latest timetable on announcement boards around the island or at main stops. For more information on beaches accessible by bus, visit our blog.
Renting a car or scooter is a convenient way to explore Paxos, especially if you want to venture beyond the main villages. Booking in advance is recommended during busy times to ensure availability.
Driving around the island is a pleasant experience, with scenic side roads leading to beaches, viewpoints, old windmills, cisterns, and more. However, be aware that parking can be challenging, especially in Gaios, Lakka, and Loggos during high season, where spaces are limited.
Renting a scooter or motorbike might be a better option for easy parking and navigating the narrow roads. Scooters are affordable and allow you to park in places where cars may not fit. For those staying within the main towns, a bike offers more flexibility without the hassle of parking issues.
Check out our blog for all the parking spaces on Paxos.
Paxos has only five taxis, so relying on them, especially during high season, requires patience. The main taxi stand is in Gaios, near the bus station at the entrance of the town. Taxis use meters, but there are also fixed rates for popular destinations. It’s highly recommended to book your taxi in advance, especially for your arrival, and avoid waiting until the last minute. Taxis are also a safe option for getting home after a late night out.
